Secrets of the Blood: Discovering my DNA in Dublin
February 6, 2014

Arrived in Dublin at 6:15 this morning. The flight to get here was only 5 1/2 hours, from Newark. The road to get here was exactly 7 years.

In late January 2007, the Sukhoy Sisters flew in and met up in Shannon, Ireland and then, with some very cool people as part of our group, toured the country, West coast to East, covering the Cliffs of Moher, the Rings of Kerry and eventually arriving in the city where a few of us kept trying to find Bono.

Since that trip, I’ve known that I wanted to revisit and spend a lengthy and highly concentrated period of time writing here. Sure, it sounds poetic, romantic and a bit cliche, but isn’t most of life that way, too?

Lots of details, big and small, had to come together, to make this all work out this way. Obviously the fiscal component. But if you work for yourself, are between places, own no key to no door and make no rent or mortgage or car payments, why not pay rent in and work from Dublin?

I’m super grateful that my family and friends have been so supportive and embracing of this adventure. Your wishes, words and wisdom give me warmth. And I’m uber grateful to Melanie Klinghoffer, the coach who, for the past year, has been career coaching this career coach’s career. Back in late September, when a certain personal situation, even with all its good, began to wear me down, she blatantly asked me a tough question and then followed up with tough love:

1. Alex, what do you want to do more than anything?

2. Either continue on this personal path of uncertainty and drama or go to Dublin and write. But you can’t do both.

She was right.  And now I’m here.

Could be nothing. Could be something. Could be everything.
